Marvel Studios has officially announced Tommy Lee Jones and Dominic Cooper have joined the cast of Captain America: The First Avenger after weeks of each actor being rumored to appear in the Avengers universe film.
Jones will play US Army Colonel Chester Phillips who is described by Marvel as having “recruited Steve Rogers to join Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America” in the Captain America comics. He will, of course, be updated for the big screen and may play a role into talking Steve (Chris Evans) into taking the syrum.
Cooper will play a younger version of Tony Stark’s father, Howard Stark, whose connection to Captain America was revealed by the contents of a chest belonging to the now deceased billionaire industrialist. John Slattery played Howard seen in a Stark Expo film reel shot in the 1970s in Iron Man 2.
Captain America: The First Avenger begins production this summer in the United Kingdom. It hits theaters everywhere on July 22, 2011.
