Earlier today, Marvel unveiled a 10-second tease for The Avengers Super Bowl advertisement following after a chat with the film’s director Joss Whedon and stars Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) that ran on the Twitter social network.
I had been hoping Whedon and the powers that be at Disney and Marvel would give us a brief glimpse at what the Avengers would be up against in the teaser spot, and sure enough they delivered just the quick snippet I imagined would be appropriate three months out from the film’s release.
Seen in the teaser spot are small alien ships blasting away at unfortunate mortal humans below. The ships are so small that they look like some kind of flying bike that the intruders are piloting. See the screen grab below (click to enlarge) and judge for yourself on whether you’re looking at Loki riding on the back of a ship, with two of his alien pals bringing up the rear.
Other new footage in the promo spot includes Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) looking worried, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) helping Captain America (Chris Evans) off the ground, Loki and his mates chasing Iron Man through the air, and what appears to be Thor using Mjolnir atop the Empire State Building in the dead of night.
I’ve also included some images of The Avengers participating in the chat below. No real news came out of the chat other than Joss Whedon debunking the silly Spider-Man cameo in The Avengers. Every other answer out of the director’s fingers was sarcastic.
The Avengers takes over theaters in 2D and 3D on May 4, 2012. Expect a huge opening weekend that could and should reach north of $100 million.
