Super Mario Bros. Controlled by Kinect

With Kinect for Xbox 360 usable on a PC via OpenKinect, it was only a matter of time before someone with a lot of time put the motion-control peripheral to use on a video game where everyone knows its name. A game starring a pudgy Italian plumber. Yes, someone actually has Kinect working with Super Mario Bros.

Using OpenKinect and an NES emulator, this guy in the video below is using his body’s movements to control Mario’s lateral and vertical movements. It looks like a lot of work and there’s clearly some lag at play, but I’m sure most of you would still love a crack at actually becoming Mario without picking up a controller.

Who knows? Maybe this is a sneak peek into what Nintendo has in store to combat Kinect and Sony’s PS3 Move.
