For the second consecutive E3, Activision has offered a convention exclusive Skylander to E3 attendees patient enough to stand in long lines for an extended duration of time and watch a demo of the game. Those that completed the task earned a 2013 E3 Hot Dog Skylander with a mild color shift feature that turns him from metallic gold to a metallic bronze hue.
As with last year’s E3 Skylander, a chrome-painted Spyro the Dragon, this year’s variant is already a hot commodity for die-hard Skylanders figure collectors that aren’t in the industry with access to the exclusive repaint. Ebay seems to be the place to go to easily buy a 2013 E3 Hot Dog Skylander, but it won’t be cheap to do so.
There are currently 147 results for the search term “E3 Hot Dog Skylander” at Ebay.com. Many of the auction listings closing soon fall into the $100 range, roughly what the Spyro was selling for a year ago. That sounds like a big number but it only works out to around three per state. Factor in international buyers, many of whom are quite dedicated to their Skylanders collections, and the 147 number doesn’t seem so big after all.
Either way you cut it, $100 is a lot of coin to drop on a single Skylander figure so these event-exclusive repaints generally appeal to completist adult collectors only. Of all the rare Skylanders repaints and variants floating around out there, the E3 and Toy Fair licensing edition ones seems to attract the most attention and empty the most wallets.
