Saw 3D opened last night at midnight and pulled in $1.7 million from what is expected to be (though never guaranteed) the last go-around for Jigsaw and his myriad of inventive death traps.
Lionsgate is hoping the move to 3D and return of Cary Elwes from the original Saw will translate to an opening weekend north of $20 million at the box office. To do so they’ll have to overcome a swath of poor reviews culminating in an abysmal 11% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Either Saw 3D is garbage or critics are burnt out on the franchise. Or both.
I’ll check back in early tomorrow with Saw 3D’s total Friday box office draw which will provide a good indication of where it will end up come Monday morning.
