Meryl Streep is coming off her brilliant portrayal of Julia Child in Julie & Julie to tackle another larger than life figure in her next film, the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady.
The film is reportedly set in 1982 and will chronicle a period spanning 17 days that lead into the Falklands War. Specifically how Lady Thatcher handled the stressful and important events will be a focal point. Jim Broadbent will portray Lady Thatcher’s husband Sir Denis.
Filming on The Iron Lady began in January and now the first picture of Streep in her Lady Thatcher persona has been released. It’s hard to get past the “Streep” in her face but otherwise the hair styling and overall look appears to be dead-on accurate for the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Pressure will be on Streep to pull off Lady Thatcher as an American actress in the role of a high-profile British figure. Though the casting choice may seem odd or even insulting to the British population, the producers felt she was one of only a handful of actresses who could play the part accurately. Any concerns will likely be washed away once the first footage of Streep in character is released.
