James Cameron’s life after the upcoming Avatar sequels could see him once again directing a strong female protagonist.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment has nabbed the rights to the Taylor Stevens novel The Informationist. The idea behind the purchase is that Cameron could potentially direct the feature film adaptation after completing Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, the sequels to Avatar that will be shot back-to-back beginning as early as next year.
The Informationist centers around Vanessa “Michael” Munroe, a woman brought up amongst “gunners and mercenaries” in central Africa. As she exited her teenage years, Munroe reinvents herself as an “information dealer” for those with deep pockets.
Munroe’s extensive expert sleuthing skills are coupled with action when a billionaire hires her to return to Africa and find his missing daughter.
Cameron’s production partner at Lightstorm Jon Landau calls Munroe a mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne, someone “who typifies the strong female protagonists that have inhabited Jim’s (Cameron’s) work.” She has the action skills of Bourne and the knowledge retrieval and sleuthing skills of Salander.
It could be some time before James Cameron gets cameras rolling on The Informationist, if he even decides to ultimately direct the film after completing the Avatar sequels that were supposed to have begun production already before being indefinitely delayed. It could be several more years before Cameron wraps Avatar 3 and there’s no telling how much gas he will have left in the tank to immediately jump into a big action film.
