Developer id Software has confirmed in-house development is currently underway on Doom 4. The announcement comes nearly 4 years after id released Doom 3, the last internally developed game from the studio.
The studio is also working on Rage, a new intellectual property best described as a post-apocalyptic shooter. That game will use a new multiplayer engine called id Tech 5, which would be a likely fit for Doom 4 as well.
The real catch is Doom 4’s location. Like in the Aliens franchise, Doom will leave its friendly confines of space and hell to venture to Earth.
“Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth,” said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead.
While id made no mention of which platforms Doom 4 would appear on, it’s a safe bet to expect it on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the PC.
