I had pegged one of two days for Disney Interactive to formally unveil Disney Infinity 3.0 following an unfortunate series of leaks not too long ago. The first was yesterday when the world celebrated Star Wars Day aka May the 4th Be With You. When no announcement came, I knew — and was right — that the announcement would come in unison with Disney’s first quarter earnings report this morning.
Sure enough, the next cover of Game Informer was revealed earlier this morning followed by the first Disney Infinity 3.0 trailer and screenshots. Game Informer also released a great behind-the-scenes video shot at Avalanche Software where the Infinity games are developed.
Before I jump into a whole slew of game assets, let’s run down the obvious and not-so-obvious Disney Infinity 3.0 facts that came out today.
The Star Wars-themed Starter Pack will include the Twilight of the Republic Play Set and two figures: Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker. This Play Set loosely covers the prequel trilogy and the Clone Wars. Additional physical figures include prequel Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul.
A second Stars Wars Play Set is called Rise Against the Empire. This Play Set comes packed with Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia figures. Additional figures include Chewbacca, Han Solo and Darth Vader.
A third Star Wars Play Set will be based upon the upcoming film Stars Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. I’ll speculate and guess that the five physical figures compatible with this Play Set are Rey, Finn, Poe, Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren.
What’s great about the Star Wars Play Sets is that any Star Wars figure can play in any Star Wars Play Set. For example, assuming there is a Kylo Ren figure, you could pit him against General Grevious. Or you could take prequel Yoda and put him up against the New Order.
There were no surprises on the Toy Box side as all of those launch figures including Quorra and Sam Flynn from Tron, Olaf, Mulan, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse already leaked. We also knew all five emotions from Pixar’s Inside Out were getting figures, and we go our first look at the Inside Out Play Set coming out for the game’s launch.
The big non-Star Wars surprise is confirmation that Marvel will continue to be supported with new product including an as-of-yet named Play Set. At least two new Avengers figures are confirmed from Avengers: Age of Ultron: Hulkbuster, seen in the videos below; and the villainous Ultron.
More Marvel, Disney and Star Wars characters will be announced at a later date.
There is also an updated fully enhanced Toy Box with two new multiplayer Toy Box Expansion Games, Toy Box Speedway (kart racing) and Toy Box Takeover (action-adventure). Disney Interactive is also teasing a “farming simulation” game in the Toy Box.
The estimated launch date for Disney Infinity 3.0 is in mid-August. Expect a heavy dose of Disney Infinity 3.0 news to trickle out over the next month and headed into E3 in mid-June.
Here are THREE Disney Infinity 3.0 videos to kick back, enjoy and study for teases. They are, in order: the Disney Infinity 3.0 trailer, Disney Infinity 3.0 Toy Box TV, and Game Informer’s behind-the-scenes sneak peek full of new plastic figures if you’re swift with the pause button.
