Lara Croft might be returning to the big screen. Only Angelina Jolie wouldn’t be portraying her.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed with Warner Brothers that a Tomb Raider reboot is in the early stages of development at the studio with producer Dan Lin, currently working on Sherlock Holmes and Jonny Quest, attached.
Warner secured the rights to the Tomb Raider film franchise from Paramount when they purchased a 19.92% stake in the game’s developer Eidos last month. Since film rights were a part of the deal, Warner appears eager to take full advantage of the now aging game franchise and its titular star.
This new Tomb Raider will reinvent the character seen in the two Angelina Jolie films. Her origins, love interest and main adversary will all be different. Whether Warner will stay truer to the game’s origins remains to be seen.
Rebooting Tomb Raider removes the necessity for Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. A new actress will be cast after a director is attached and a script completed with current rumors point towards Tranformers’ Megan Fox. Personally I don’t think she’s the right “bod” or “voice” for the role.
