Paramount has finally offered a first look at Bumblebee, the first official spin-off from Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise and first entry set in the past – 1987 to be precise.
The Bumblebee teaser trailer centers around the relationship between the famous mute Autobot and a young mechanic, Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld. Director Travis Knight appears keen on exploring this relationship between human and robot much further than Bay ever did in his five Transformers feature films.
Apart from introducing the emotional connection between Bumblebee and Charlie, the teaser trailer also introduces a more refined and simplified design aesthetic for the yellow robot in disguise. He now looks more like his Generation 1 self in robot mode with fewer mechanical parts and more outer shell visible.
My favorite shot in the Bumblebee movie teaser trailer shows what appears to be a Generation 1 Starscream in mid-transformation, complete with blue and red highlights. Why he’s in this movie, or what the central plot might be other than Bumblebee on the run, remains unknown.
Bumblebee also stars John Cena, Rachel Crow,Pamela Adlon, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. It arrives in theaters on December 21st.
