Xbox 360 Successor Codenamed by Microsoft as Durango

The Vow Contines Box Office Dominance by Winning Friday AgainDurango isn’t just a gas-guzzling SUV anymore. It is now the codename of the next generation Xbox game system.

Kotaku is reporting that Microsoft has selected the codename for what will be the third generation of Xbox gaming consoles, which historically points to the final leg of the new system’s development cycle. Maybe now we can finally put the Xbox 720 name to rest, though theoretically speaking, Microsoft could still go that route for the official marketing name.

It is commonplace for game companies to use codenames during the final phase of development. The Nintendo GameCube was named ‘Dolphin’ until very late in the development cycle, and the Wii was known as the Nintendo Revolution, which is actually a much better name than the silly Wii or its upcoming successor, Wii U.

Even though Microsoft has publicly stated that Xbox 360 successor would not be unveiled at this year’s E3 expo in June, all signs are pointing toward the contrary. Regardless of when it is revealed, the Durango, or whatever it will be called, is coming very soon!
