Weekend Box Office Sieged by Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds rode a wave of high marks and Brad Pitt’s star power to an easy opening weekend box office crown with an estimated $37.6 million in ticket receipts.

Basterds easily beat out other newcomers weekend including Robert Rodriguez’s Shorts ($6.6 million) and Post Grad ($2.8 million) with Alexis Bledel.

Neil Blomkamp’s District 9 took second in the weekend box office results after a strong opening last weekend. Another $18.9 million brings its total to $73.5 million and a date with $100 million increasingly possible. Third place went to another “guy” movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It tacked on $12 million to brings its domestic total to $120 million and worldwide gross to $222.7 million.

Paramount’s The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard ultimately fell hard from the top 10 in its second weekend. Its $2.65 million in tickets was only able to secure an 11th place finish.
