Warm Bodies Runs Hot with $8.1 Million Friday to Commence Super Bowl Weekend

Warm Bodies Runs Hot with $8.1 Million Friday to Commence Super Bowl WeekendWarm Bodies got off to a hot start at the box office this Super Bowl weekend and is poised to easily win the three-day frame.

Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Rob Corddry and John Malkovich, Warm Bodies opened at just over 3,000 locations and drummed up an opening day tally of $8.1 million in ticket sales. If the unusual film about a romance between a human and a zombie stays the course, it should finish the weekend right around $20 million and deliver a rare non-franchise hit to Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate Films.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters expectedly tumbled in its second weekend of release after finishing first last weekend. Off 51%, the graphic modern day reimagining of the Brothers Grimm classic tale earned $2.9 million and pushed its overall gross earnings up to $28.2 million.

Silver Linings Playbook continues to ride the awards season and hang around in the top five. It finished in third on Friday with $2.4 million, an increase from last Friday, and continues to march toward $100 million with $74.7 million and counting.

Bullet to the Head proved Sylvester Stallone is much more marketable when he has his fellow elder action heroes by his side. With a debut of $1.7 million, it’s possible the action thriller will fall short of a $5 million opening weekend. Stallone might want to consider getting a move on The Expendables 3 ASAP.

Rounding out the top five is the Best Picture contender Zero Dark Thirty with $1.63 million. Its total now stands as $74.1 million and, unlike Silver Linings Playbook, is unlikely to reach the magical $100 million mark as it gets ready to slide out of the top five.

Stop back tomorrow to see if Warm Bodies was hot enough to cross $20 million.
