Updated: Borderlands 2 Confirmed and Coming in 2012

Borderlands 2 is officially in development and will offer a return trip to Pandora next year.

2K Games and Gearbox Software made Borderlands 2 official today after news broke yesterday of the game’s existence and a 2012 delivery date based on the latest issue of Game Informer magazine (see the cover below and click it for a larger version). The official announcement narrows down the release window to between April 1, 2012 and June 30, 2012. The original Borderlands was released in October 2009.

For the Borderlands sequel, 2K Games promises new “characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment” that will help bring new areas of Pandora to life. The game will be unveiled to the world at Gamescom in a couple weeks, and later this month at PAX Prime.

Also per the announcement, Borderlands 2 is in development for Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC. It is not in development for Nintendo’s Wii U, which fuels speculation that Nintendo’s new next-gen console won’t be available until the fourth quarter of 2012.

I’ll pass along any media associated with Borderlands 2 as soon as it’s released.
