Twilight Eclipse Takes Midnight Opening Record and Targets More

Summit Entertainment is rolling in the dough as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opened on over 4,000 screens at midnight en-route to a record $30 million in ticket sales between the 12:01am and 3am showings. The former record holder? The Twilight Saga: New Moon with $26.3 million.

As if one record from midnight showings wasn’t enough, Eclipse snagged another as well. It broke through the $1 million mark for IMAX midnight showings which no previous film has done before. The closest any film came was Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s $960k.

Eclipse now has its sights set on numerous records as it enters its first weekend in theaters on an all-time high 4,416 screens. There’s the highest Wednesday opening of all-time (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $62 million), largest non-opening Thursday (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $29 million), largest non-opening Friday (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with $36.7 million), fastest to $100 million (The Twilight Saga: New Moon in 2 days) and the fastest to $150 million (The Dark Knight in 3 days) amongst others.

The Twilight Eclipse box office bonanza has just begun.
