Transformers 2 Demolishes Harry Potter’s IMAX Box Office Record

More screens and Michael Bay touting a minute or so of exclusive screens sent the IMAX release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen straight into the record books.

Through its first five days at IMAX, Transformers 2 pulled in $14.4 million in ticket sales. The previous record holder, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, had earned a little more than half of the new record at $7.3 million.

The $14.4 in IMAX tickets for Transformers 2 represents roughly 7 percent of the total box office gross of $201.2 million. That percentage may rise as those who were forced to see it in traditional theaters due to IMAX sellouts make their way into IMAX in the coming weeks.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be the first IMAX challenger for Transformers 2 but it will not be a day-and-date release. Due to the proximity between the two film’s on the calendar, Harry Potter in IMAX will not be released until two weeks after it lands theatrically.
