The Hunger Games movie is headed to IMAX for a limited run as announced by Lionsgate and IMAX this morning.
The film, the first of four based on Suzanne Collins’ insanely popular young adult novels, will be digitally remastered for its IMAX engagement. The first IMAX showings will take place day-and-date with traditional screenings on opening day, March 23. IMAX showings will continue until March 30, at which time the film will be removed from IMAX screens entirely.
The limited move to IMAX will help Lionsgate capitalize on the growing craze that The Hunger Games has become. No one is expecting the film to put up Twilight numbers for Lionsgate, who ironically now owns Twilight studio Summit Entertainment. But as The Hunger Games were the bestselling books on Amazon.com in January, the opening weekend is still poised to blow out expectations as fans flock to learn more about the series.
The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. See it in IMAX or cinemas on March 23.
