The Hangover Scores Again in Weekend Box Office Results

Warner’s The Hangover woke up this morning to a second straight weekend box office win if early estimates pan out.

Box office receipts for The Hangover from June 12-14 are estimated to have totaled $33.4 million, only a 26% drop from last weekend’s slim win over Pixar’s Up. That film, riding a wave of nothing but stellar reviews, managed second place with a nearly equally strong $30.5 million take.

The big newcomer this past weekend, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 remake with John Travolta and Denzel Washington, managed a respectable $25 million but likely would have tallied more had The Hangover and Up not continued to outperform. The Hangover in particular stole patrons from Pelham’s adult male targeted demographic.

The other newcomer, Imagine That with Eddie Murphy, proved to be another flop for the flailing star with only $5.7 million despite relatively positive reviews across the board. Not even a thumbs up can surmount the public’s current perception of what to expect from an Eddie Murphy film.

Another summer bust, The Land of the Lost, has already slipped to $9.2 million in its second week of release despite playing in 200 more theaters than The Hangover. Its theater count will likely plummet next weekend.

The complete box office results for June 12-14 are as follows:

  • 1. The Hangover: $33.4m
  • 2. Up: $30.5m
  • 3. Taking of Pelham 1 2 3: $25m
  • 4. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: $9.6m
  • 5. Land of the Lost: $9.2m
  • 6. Imagine That: $5.7m
  • 7. Star Trek: $5.6m
  • 8. Terminator Salvation: $4.7m
  • 9. Angels & Demons: $4.2m
  • 10. Drag Me to Hell: $3.9m

Next weekend another prehistoric-themed goofball comedy, Year One starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, squares off against the romantic comedy The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Consider it the calm before the Transformers storm forecast for the week after.
