Christopher Nolan took the stage at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and upon accepting his Modern Master Award for Inception, offered up some small tidbits about The Dark Knight Rises.
Per SuperHeroHype who was in attendance, moderator Pete Hammond first asked Nolan where he came up with the Batman 3 title of The Dark Knight Rises. Nolan responded jokingly “I banged my head against the wall.”
Nolan then got a little more serious and said he and story co-creator David Goyer have been working on the film for a long time. Shooting will begin in May, roughly 12 weeks from right now.
In response to why he is making a third Batman film after initially being apprehensive about returning to the franchise, Nolan said he wanted to finish the story he began. The idea that The Dark Knight Rises will conclude a three-film arc has been offered by Nolan before and this only reinforces that creative direction.
Hammond didn’t have much luck getting the Inception director to talk about the casting of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. When asked if Hathaway’s character would be just Selina or also Catwoman, Nolan simply smirked and sat in absolute silence.
Nolan has a lot to accomplish over the next 22 months. In addition to shooting and finishing The Dark Knight Rises for release in July 2012, he and his wife/producing partner Emma Thomas will be working alongside Zack Snyder on the Superman reboot. Henry Cavill was just cast in the lead as Clark Kent / Superman over the weekend as the rebirth of that superhero franchise begins to take shape.
