The Dark Knight Rises May Add Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Christopher Nolan appears to be tapping his Inception well again in filling out the roles for The Dark Knight Rises aka Batman 3.

Deadline is reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to reunite with his Inception director for The Dark Knight Rises. Though no deal is done yet, Deadline’s sources are confident that he’ll be a part of the cast when filming begins in early May.

Gordon-Levitt has been rumored to be in the running for a Batman 3 role since Inception dominated the box office last summer. His name was most often attached to The Riddler, though Nolan and Warner Bros. have already confirmed the villain roles of Selina Kyle and Bale will be going to Anne Hathaway and Inception’s Tom Hardy, respectively.

With The Riddler apparently offer the table, new speculation is stirring that Gordon-Levitt might reprise Heath Ledger’s The Joker in some capacity despite Nolan having gone on record as saying The Joker will not appear in the film. The physical resemblance between Gordon-Levitt and Ledger is undeniably uncanny, but Nolan’s insistence to leave Ledger’s The Joker legacy alone is hard to refute.

Another role Gordon-Levitt could step into is that of Robin, the Boy Wonder. Though Nolan maintains The Dark Knight Rises is the final installment in his Batman trilogy, Warner Bros. could set up a spin-off with characters like Robin and Catwoman starring in their own films.

My best guess is that Gordon-Levitt will fit into a secondary role neither necessarily a big-name villain or hero, similar to the small role of Anthony Michael Hall in The Dark Knight.
