Spyro Returns in Game and Toy Hybrid Skylanders

The death of one mega Activision game franchise and given way to the return of another.

Spyro, the small purple dragon who led gamers through multiple platformer adventures, has been cleared for take-off in a new adventure coming to stores this fall. Unlike this past games, Skylander: Spyro’s Adventure comes with a twist. Make that 32 small plastic twists.

The brand awareness of Spyro and his colorful friends are being used to create a revolutionary gaming experience. The game will allow players to transport real-world toys into virtual worlds across numerous gaming platforms. Wherever the toys are transported to, via consoles, mobile device apps or even the Internet, all the scores, level-ups and achievements the characters have amassed will travel along with them.

Activision CEO calls the little Spyro action figures “inter-action figures” and claims the fusion of toy, video game and storytelling will create a single robust entertainment experience.

The action figures of Spryo and 31 of his friends all come with built-in unique powers. They enter the virtual worlds via the “Portal of Power” including the ability for two figures to be placed on the portal at once for cooperative or versus play. The game’s main story was penned by Alek Sokolow and Joel Cohen who both worked on Pixar’s original Toy Story film.

Toys R Us has partnered with Activision and will help launch Skylander: Spyro’s Adventure this fall with a number of unnamed exclusives (most likely unique figures). Pricing for the disc-based game expected to be available (though unconfirmed at this time) on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and the PC should be available once Toy Fair gets underway on Sunday.
