I’ve been so caught up in Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and The Avengers recently that Marvel’s already announced Iron Man 3 had fallen off the radar. It’s back on tonight and in a potentially big way.
THR is reporting that Shane Black has been chatting with Marvel and is in contention to direct Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 3. Should he get the job he’ll likely find himself penning a draft for the film based off an idea that’s currently top secret at the superhero studio.
Jon Favreau had directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2 for Paramount/Marvel and was originally expected to return and wrap up a trilogy. When Disney offered Favreau the directing gig for their big “Magic Kingdom” project in December, he couldn’t refuse and left Marvel without a helmer for Iron Man 3.
Black has an impressive resume that includes co-writing and directing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the underrated but highly enjoyable flick that starred Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr. His other works are no slouches either including penning the scripts for the original Lethal Weapon, The Monster Squad and The Last Boy Scout. He seems like a natural fit for the role despite whoever else Marvel currently has their eye on.
Iron Man 3 will be the first post-Avengers film and is already locked into a May 3, 2013 release date. Aside from Robert Downey Jr. returning no other roles have been formally announced.
