The countdown to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot now stands at under two days and the studio and everyone else involved is pretty pumped. They should be; this Star Trek reinvention is one hell of a thrilling ride you’ll want to experience more than once.
I finally had the chance to see it last night and emerged thoroughly entertained. Abrams, his screenwriters and the stellar ensemble cast of John Cho, Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Winona Ryder, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana and Leonard Nimoy have successfully made Star Trek “fun” again for the first time theatrically since The Voyage Home.
The real test for Star Trek will be in its ability to draw moviegoers turned off by stereotypical sci-fi heavy fare. My wife falls into this crowd and came away satisfied, her only minor complaint being “too many spaceship battles.” Will others like her feel compelled to give Star Trek a shot despite overwhelming positive reviews (read our Star Trek movie review here)? Or will Star Trek’s legacy of techno-babble and enthusiasts speaking Klingon at conventions turn them off?
Below are the latest and greatest TV spots Paramount is running to promote Star Trek. We’ll find out soon enough whether they help push Star Trek past a good opening to a blockbuster one this upcoming weekend.
