The last time we saw Red Sonja on the big screen Ronald Reagan was President and parachute pants were all the rage.
Nearly a quarter century later, Nu Image/Millennium Films has announced plans to bring the red-headed she-devil back onto the big screen after a successful resurgence of the character in Dynamite’s comic series over the past several years.
Reigning big-budget B-movie queen Rose McGowan has been tapped to portray the titular vixen, while her fiance Robert Rodriguez will co-produce and “present” the film.
Rose will carry on the legacy of Brigitte Nielsen who played the role in the original film. This new film will be a complete re-invention based on the comics and not tie into the original.
“Dynamite has been publishing Red Sonja comics for the last several years, reinventing the character for a modern audience and we’re exceptionally pleased that the right combination of talent has been found to bring her to life on the big screen.” says Executive Producer Nick Barrucci.
The film will begin with Red Sonja as a young girl seeking vengeance upon those who slaughtered her family. In this quest she finds a greater purpose: to save all the lands from the villainous Kulan Gath.
Red Sonja’s success may open up the door for the return of Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers to the big screen, all properties of Millennium Films.
Red Sonja begins shooting this October with a probable mid-to-late 2009 release.
