A shower of arrows and marketing angled to elicit memories of Braveheart were not enough for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett to secure the top spot at the box office on its opening day.
Friday box office results show Robin Hood opened with $13.1 million, approximately $2 million less than the $15 million Paramount and Marvel’s Iron Man 2 put up in its sophomore weekend. Robin Hood was expected to open in the $40 million range but now looks more likely to finish the weekend somewhere between $30 and $35 million.
Another newcomer, Summit Entertainment’s Letters to Juliet, managed around $5 million on Friday and could finish the weekend in the $12-13 million range. Also new this weekend was the basketball romantic comedy Just Wright that came in with $2.9 million in its opening frame to pace it for an $8 million weekend.
Swing by tomorrow for the complete weekend box office estimates.
