Patty Jenkins Abruptly Departs Thor 2 Over Creative Differences

Patty Jenkins Abruptly Departs Thor 2 Over Creative DifferencesPatty Jenkins has surprisingly left her post as director of Marvel’s Thor 2 over what Deadline Hollywood is reporting as “creative differences.”

Jenkins was a shocking choice to helm the big budget sequel given her slim resume which includes Monster and the pilot of AMC’s 2011 murder mystery series The Killing. She took over for Kenneth Branagh who also ran into creative differences with Marvel on the Thor 2 story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins was hard at work on Thor 2 as late as yesterday afternoon. They had interviewed Jenkins less than a week ago in which she talked openly about her excitement for the project and her longstanding love for superhero films.

Deadline’s scoop suggests that Jenkins’ relationship with Marvel is not severed after her departure from Thor 2. She could still helm a future Marvel superhero film, possibly a first entry in a franchise and not a sequel.

Marvel is already hot on the hunt for a replacement and is expected to begin interviewing candidates as soon as feasibly possible. Expect names in the running to start leaking sooner rather than later.

Thor 2 returns Chris Hemsworth into the title role as an Asgardian god with a soft spot for protecting Earth and its mortal inhabitants. Story details for the sequel penned by Thor co-writer Don Payne have been kept under wraps, but it is widely expected that the Asgardian will travel to realms outside the three seen in the original film.

Marvel and Disney will release Thor 2 on November 15, 2013.
