Neill Blomkamp’s first post-Distict 9 film Elysium has been assigned a March 8, 2013 release by Sony Pictures and added another actor to the growing cast.
The good news for Sony is Elysium should take advantage of spring break and Easter to boost its box office returns by arriving in theaters in early March. Currently no other films occupy that weekend.
The bad news for us is Elysium is a full two years away. On top of that, hopes for a District 10 have also been pushed back with Elysium’s release date.
Currently set to star in Elysium are District 9’s Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, and Matt Damon. Earlier today Latino Review broke the news that Brazilian actor Wagner Moura from Elite Squad 1 and 2 has boarded the project as the main villain.
Details surrounding Elysium’s story are being kept under tight wraps. All that’s currently known and/or assumed is the film is set roughly 100 years in the future on another planet. Blomkamp promises it will be violent, feature cool futuristic technology, and touch upon sociopolitical themes in a similar manner as District 9 did.
