Marvel’s Kevin Feige Talks Captain America’s Red Skull

The biggest mystery surrounding Marvel and Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger film is how Hugo Weaving will look on screen after he has been transformed into Red Skull.

Comic-Con attendees this past July got a brief glimpse at Weaving as Red Skull but the actual skull’s look remains under wraps. According to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Weaving has been in the full Red Skull wardrobe for at least a couple weeks.

“Hugo Weaving has been in the Red Skull effect, in costume for a couple of weeks now and it’s a hell of a lot of fun,” Feige told Total Film when asked about the character. “We gave people a little taste in San Diego about what his character will look like but now that we’ve started to work with the actual skull it’s going to be a lot of fun and a rather frightening villain.”

The phrase “working with the actual skull” potentially denotes a skull mask or make-up versus a CGI skull that would be added in post-production ala Destro at the end of GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Considering Ryan Reynolds as The Green Lantern will be wearing an entirely CGI suit, anything is possible when it comes to Red Skull’s portrayal. I’m personally pulling for makeup with a touch of CGI when necessary.
