Madden cover votes were tallied today in Times Square and the winner hails from a city that has not been relevant to the Madden cover since the days of Barry Sanders.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson beat out Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for the Madden NFL 13 cover by a margin of 52% to 48%. Overall voting this year versus last was up 19.6 million vs. 12.7 million votes.
Calvin will have to deal with the infamous Madden Curse that has plagued previous winners now that he’s joined them in gracing the cover. Considering Johnson’s skills and his up-and-coming team, the only way his stats will recede next season is if he’s injured or other teams decide to triple or quadruple cover him on a regular basis.
Madden NFL 13 comes to Xbox 360 Kinect, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and PS Vita on August 28. Check out an image of EA’s Calvin cover mockup below, unless this turns out to be the final cover art imagery. Which it very well could.
