Joss Whedon Close to The Avengers Directing Gig

Will the maestro behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel, Firefly/Serenity and Dollhouse be taking the reigns of Marvel’s penultimate superhero flick?

According to Deadline Hollywood, Joss Whedon has entered final negotiations with Marvel Studios to take the reigns of The Avengers film coming in 2012. This follows several weeks of Whedon’s name appearing as a rumored candidate for the coveted gig.

If hired, The Avengers would be Whedon’s second feature film directing effort after Serenity, a film that was attracted polar opposite reviews ranging from “genius” to “rubbish.” I personally lean more towards the “genius” side and have been greatly entertained the multiple times having watched Serenity on Blu-ray.

The Avengers will star at minimum Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Edward Norton may return as The Incredible Hulk, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Other superheroes will likely appear as well.

What do you all think of Joss Whedon tackling The Avengers? Do you think he has what it takes to keep these stars in check with one another and deliver the right tone with what is sure to be an enormous budget?
