After the death of Heath Ledger, one of several Batman 3 rumors swirling around claimed Joseph Gordon-Levitt would assume the role of The Joker. Nolan recently shot that idea down, but Gordon-Levitt’s participation in the upcoming film is building momemtum.
Unnamed sources close to Nolan have supposedly told Hollywood Life that he and Gordon-Levitt had a running joke going. Gordon-Levitt wanted to read for a Batman 3 role and as production pushed further, the joke began to turn more real.
“It’s not 100% confirmed that he’s getting [the role of The Riddler] but there’s certainly talk about it,” the source said. “Joseph is definitely on the short list.”
Casting is still a ways off on Batman 3 with the script in-process and a release date two years out. It’s not too far-fetched for Nolan to know who the villain will be and an informal list to be underway.
Cobra Commander aside, Gordon-Levitt has a good acting range and clearly Nolan sees something in him. We should get a better idea of how the pair work together when Inception hits theaters next month.
