Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 behind stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint crossed the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales over the weekend, becoming the first in the eight-film franchise to achieve the impressive feat. Warner Bros. also announced the film tied for the fastest to reach $1 billion with Avatar.
To date, only nine films have reached $1 billion in global ticket sales including the Harry Potter finale. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is expected to become the tenth within the next week or so.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has amassed $318.46 million domestically, a record for the series, and $690 million internationally, also a series high. The total global box office earnings now stand at $1.008 billion.
As of this morning, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 stood in eighth place on the all-time worldwide box office grosses chart. It is expected to top Alice in Wonderland ($1.0243) and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.0328) before its theatrical run comes to a close.
The next conquest for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 will be on Blu-ray and DVD later this year. Look for that announcement to be made within the next 1-2 months.
