Denis Leary Close to Spider-Man Reboot Role as Gwen Stacy’s Pop

Columbia Pictures is in negotiations with Denis Leary for the Rescue Me star to portray Gwen Stacy’s father, George, in the upcoming Marc Webb Spider-Man reboot movie. If brought on board, Denis will be working closely with Emma Stone who has already been cast as Gwen.

Should the top secret Spider-Man script follows the comics then there are two possibilities for how George Stacy will be portrayed. In the mainstream Spider-Man run, George was an un-retired police captain with a keen interest in Spider-Man. He would eventually be killed in an act of heroism by Dr. Octopus and his daughter would go on to blame Spider-Man for his death.

In the Ultimate Spider-Man storyline, George was called John and was much younger, still in service and without gray hair. He has less of an interest in Spider-Man and is ultimately killed by Chameleon. Like in the mainstream run, his daughter develops a hatred for the webslinger after her father’s demise.

Denis’ age of 53 years young puts him in a position to pull off either Stacy from the comics. I’m hoping scribes James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent came up with a new unexpected twist on the character to keep us on our toes.
