Clash of the Titans 2 Moving Forward Fast

The nearly $500 million Clash of the Titans made at the box office, two-thirds of which came from overseas business, has spurred Warner Bros. to move forward on a sequel. The availability of its star, Sam Worthington, has Warner stepping on the gas.

The L.A. Times is reporting Clash of the Titans producers and Warner/Legendary Pictures execs are in the hunt for a director to helm Clash of the Titans 2 with production to begin as early as January. The first film’s director, Louis Leterrier, has already bowed out. Star Sam Worthington could begin work on Avatar 2 as early as late 2011 so the need to lock up his pre-Avatar sequel schedule is strong.

Leading the pack for the director’s chair is Jonathan Liebesman, best known for helming The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and Darkness Falls. He’s currently working on the alien invasion film Battle: Los Angeles, due in theaters next year, and has a deal with Warner to shoot his take on Odysseus along with the producers of 300.

Whoever is ultimately hired will be shooting the film in 3D rather than the post-production conversion process that fans cried foul on with the first Clash of the Titans film. Hopefully Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures can avoid the creative headbutting that plagued that film as well.
