Update: I have added small images a one-sheet double-sided poster Activision sent to retailers in anticipation of the Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-order. Thanks to Josh for the images.
Activision has finally pushed all the leaks and rumors aside in announcing Call of Duty: Ghosts is the next game in the ongoing franchise from Infinity Ward, permanently debunking the idea of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Here’s what has been confirmed about the game as of this morning.
Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature an all-new story, settings and characters. More important to CoD fans, the game has been built from the ground up on a new “next generation” engine. In other words, for the first time in many years, a new Call of Duty game should – in theory – look leaps and bounds better than its predecessors.
Right now Activision is content sharing a live-action teaser trailer that highlights the many masks worn in combat over the centuries, ending with a reveal of the “ghosts.” The full game reveal will take place on May 21 during Microsoft’s Next-Gen event and will be available to watch online via live streaming as well as on Xbox and Spike TV.
Here’s a quote from Mark Rubin, executive producer at Infinity Ward.
“Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we’re not resting on our laurels. We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we’re building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can’t wait to share them with our community.”
Though Activision is currently claiming Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available on Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC on November 5, it is widely expected to be available for Wii U, PS4 and the next Xbox as well. This is quoted from this morning’s press release:
Call of Duty: Ghosts will set a new Benchmark for the Next Generation
