A leak forced Activision’s hand and late last night they formally unveiled the first trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the next iteration of the annualized franchise that has enlisted House of Cards star Kevin Spacey to wreak havoc on the world.
Developer Sledgehammer Games, a lesser-known player in the Call of Duty franchise that chipped in on Modern Warfare 3, has been working on Advanced Warfare for three years per Activision’s new three-studio development cycle. The footage from the trailer is slick and grabbed from Xbox One, though you can expect the game to land on PlayStation 4 and the PC as well, and possibly even Wii U.
Spacey looks to be playing the architypical politically-driven antihero, almost a character pulled right out of House of Cards. He’s playing in a world where private military corporations are for hire and can determine who the next world superpower will be. And this particular world is set further into the future than any Call of Duty game before has reached.
Some of the “advanced warfare” tactics and machinery on display in the trailer include super-jumping ala Titalfall, seeing enemies through walls, spider-mech robots, aircraft that look like they flew off the virtual set of James Cameron’s Avatar, scaling walls with sticky gloves that Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is familiar with, hover bikes, and creating a temporary wall of cover from a small carryable gadget.
“Power changes everything” for the Call of Duty franchise when Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare arrives in stores on November 4.
