James Cameron’s Avatar is off to a hot start at the box office with an estimated $27 million opening on Friday after bringing in $3.5 million from midnight showings.
Reports of sellouts are coming in from around the country as a massive winter storm makes its way up the east coast. That storm could adversely affect Avatar’s Friday through Sunday weekend opening as prospective moviegoers could find themselves snowed in and cuddled up with a big cup of hot chocolate instead.
At its current clip and assuming the snow and holiday effect, it will be a close call as to whether Avatar can beat the December box office opening weekend record of $77.2 million held by I Am Legend with Will Smith.
