Weekend Box Office Results: ‘Good Boys’ Generates Good Business

The late summer box office has belonged to Universal as their latest film, the R-Rated comedy Good Boys, scored the third straight weekend win for the studio.

Good Boys rode a wave of critical and audience cheers to a $21 million opening weekend at the domestic box office. With a production budget at an estimated $20 million, it’s already considered a success and should at least double that number by the time it heads off to home video.

Universal also took second place this weekend with holdover Hobbs & Shaw. The Fast & Furious spin-off continues to make a strong case for further adventures with $14.1 million in business. The domestic total now stands at $133.7 million while worldwide ticket sales are at $437 million and counting.

Third place went to Disney’s latest billion-dollar box office powerhouse, The Lion King. Another $11.9 million this past weekend pushes its domestic total to $496 million and worldwide total to $1.435 billion. It is now $8 million behind Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast for 13th place on the all-time domestic box office champs list.

Sony Animation’s The Angry Birds Movie 2 was favorably reviewed and generated some positive buzz online. That buzz failed to generate much business as it earned $10.5 million over the weekend and $5.7 million from Tuesday through Thursday. Don’t expect Sony to rush a third film into production.

Capping the Top Five is Lionsgate’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film for kids added $10 million domestically and sits at $55 million worldwide. a 52% drop stateside is a good sign that this film will stick around for a little while longer.
