If Disney and Pixar’s Cars 2 went over-the-top with its goofy spy shenanigans then this first Cars 3 trailer makes a hard 180-degree turn into much darker territory.
Heavy shadows. Grit. Darkness. The Cars 3 trailer makes it quite obvious Pixar wants to lure adult audiences back into the Cars fold with this rather somber first look into the future of the franchise.
The reluctant hero, Lightning McQueen, is back on the race circuit and gets involved in a rather serious accident. His car/body begins to roll and the trailer comes to an end with a promise that the moment of the accident will forever change everything.
Popular theories suggest McQueen’s racing career will be undone by the accident and he’ll be forced into mentoring a young hotshot racer about as unteachable as he once was. Think the evolution of the Rocky franchise that may or may not provide some inspiration.
And that’s all Pixar is willing to share about Cars 3 at this time. “From this moment, everything will change.” Get used to that phrase.
Cars 3 zooms into theaters next summer.
