Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that PlayStation 4 sales surpassed 40 million total units worldwide on May 22nd, 2016. This, according to Sony, makes PS4 the fastest-selling PlayStation console to reach this milestone.
A big reason for the recent run in PS4 sales that pushed worldwide units sold over 40 million was the May 10th release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The final adventure of Nathan Drake and first Uncharted game made exclusively for PS4 served as a major catalyst to sell PS4s to holdouts waiting specifically for the game.
Looking ahead provides even more fuel for PS4 sales to reach 50 million and beyond. PlayStation VR will officially release this fall and open up a whole new world of immersive gaming to console gamers, assuming you can find one in a store following a quick sellout of pre-orders.
There’s also the rumored PS4K console upgrade that will add extra horsepower to the PS4 system architecture and enable the playback of 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays and other 4K media, such as from Netflix. The upgraded PS4 may not release until 2017 but it will certainly add another catalyst boost to sales.
If the PS4K is indeed imminent then we might get our first look at the updated PS4 a couple weeks from now at E3 2016.
