Minecraft PS4 Edition Release Date Surprises by Arriving Tomorrow

Microsoft may have struck first but Sony has scored the last laugh when it comes to the new-gen console version of Mojang’s addictive Minecraft game.

Sony surprised PlayStation 4 owners this evening by announcing the Minecraft PS4 Edition release date will not only arrive this week, but it will beat the Xbox One Edition by a full day. You read that right; Minecraft PS4 is coming on Thursday, September 4, and will be ready to download and install prior to 12pm PST.

The announcement comes almost an exact day after Microsoft announced that Minecraft Xbox One Edition would be ready to purchase starting this Friday. At the time it seemed as if the PS4 version needed a little more work to pass Sony’s testing process, but that turned out not to be the case.

As with the Xbox One Edition, anyone playing Minecraft on the previous Sony console version — in this case PS3 — will be able to upgrade to the PS4 Edition for $4.99. Purchasing Minecraft PlayStation 4 Edition from scratch will set you back $19.99.

The same rules apply on PS4 as they do on Xbox One. All saves on PS3 can be easily imported into PS4, and all previously purchased DLC content will be available to download on PS4 for absolutely no charge.

There will be a lot fewer people out and about this weekend with Minecraft PS4 Edition and Minecraft Xbox One Edition both being available to purchase by Friday evening at the latest.
