Chloë Grace Moretz takes on alien invaders in The 5th Wave, the 2016 Sci-Fi action flick based on the best-selling novel by Rick Yancey. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is handling the film’s home video release and has served up release dates on Digital HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.
The 5th Wave will first arrive on April 12th exclusively on Digital HD. If you’re holding out for a physical disc version then the 4k UHD, Blu-ray and DVD releases drop the following month on May 3rd.
Sony had planned on The 5th Wave starting a new young adult franchise with popular and talented Chloë Grace Moretz in the lead role. Those plans may have been fatally affected by a massive East Coast blizzard that wreaked havoc at the box office the same weekend The 5th Wave debuted.
Pre-order The 5th Wave on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD or Digital HD at Amazon.com for a discounted price.
As a result, the modestly-budgeted film at $38 million only earned just over $10 million during its opening weekend and just under $34 million domestically to date. Stronger international performance has pushed the gross worldwide box office totals above $105 million so there’s still an outside shot that The 5th Wave will get a sequel, especially if it performs well on home video.
The 5th Wave will be presented on Blu-ray with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD Master Audio while the 4K UHD Blu-ray version gets HDR and a Dolby Atmos mix compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Bonus features include the following:
Commentary with Director J Blakeson and Chloë Grace Moretz
- Five Featurettes:
- “Inside The 5th Wave
- “Sammy on the Set”
- “The 5th Wave Survival Guide”
- “Training Squad 53”
