Lucasfilm is hiring from within the familial ranks for a new role in Star Wars Rebels Season 2. This news should have been especially thrilling for Freddie Prinze, Jr., her husband and now co-star, and builds upon the Star Wars family that will expand greatly later this year with the release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Star Wars Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni spoke to advertisers shortly after the Star Wars Rebels Season 1 finale this past Monday evening to announce that Sarah Michelle Gellar would be joining the voice cast in a recurring Season 2 role. Who the former Vampire Slayer would be playing wasn’t discussed, though I have a good idea based on where the series is headed.
As the final few episodes of Star Wars Rebels Season 1 revealed, Kanan and his band of fighters have reached out beyond their home planet of Lothal to connect with other rebel factions throughout the galaxy. Seeing as how the Star Wars Rebels timeline is now somewhere between four and five years away from Star Wars: Episode VII – A New Hope, some familiar faces should start appearing.
One such rebel presence yet to be seen on Rebels is that of Mon Mothma, seen as a young politician in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and much later as a rebel leader in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Mothma is the character I could see Gellar playing versus say a young Princess Leia, who might still be too young to be involved in dangerous rebel missions.
The Star Wars Rebels Season 2 premiere will take place during Star Wars Celebration from April 16-19. However, everyone else will have to wait until this upcoming fall to see the next season’s worth of episodes.
