SEGA and Gearbox have unleashed a new Aliens: Colonial Marines trailer that asks you to “fight the fear” in a newly revealed multiplayer mode.
The new mode is dubbed “Survivor” and pits what appears to be four Colonial Marines against at least four Xenomorphs, all of which are controlled by human players. Teamwork appears to be the name of the game if the Marines are to survive. If one falls, there’s no indication they will resurrect. Once you’re dead, you’re dead.
The “fear” comes into play when you’re the last marine standing and completely overwhelmed. There’s no one to watch your back and Xenomorphs crawling all over the place. “Survivor” could deliver some genuine tension with the lights turned down low.
I’m wondering if this trailer also introduces a new type of suicidal Xenomorph. It looks like there’s a Xenomorph that pulls its jaw apart and explodes from the inside, sending its acid blood flying all over the place. If this is what is happening, and that’s a big “if,” wouldn’t the player controlling that Xenomorph then be out of the game? A suicide attack would present some interesting gameplay strategies depending on how many Xenomorph slots are available to fill.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is inching closer to its February 12, 2013 release date on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC, and the newly released Wii U.
