Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods starring Chris Hemsworth (pre-Thor stardom), Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) has been in hibernation for two years since it was originally filmed. A series of speedbumps kept the film on the shelf, but finally we have our first look in the form of a trailer.
Cabin in the Woods was always recognized as being a slasher horror thriller set in, well, a cabin in the woods. As the trailer reveals, there’s a lot more going on in this cabin than a guy running around picking off attractive young people with sharp or blunt objects.
After watching the Cabin in the Woods trailer a couple times, I’d go as far as to say the film will fit in alongside Cube as a sci-fi thriller more so than a horror movie. It looks like there’s plenty of scares and offing of the cast, but the mash-up with clearly sci-fi and technological elements takes it to another level of entertainment.
Cabin in the Woods was almost lost in the woods indefinitely. It was originally delayed when MGM decided it needed a 3D overhaul. That never happened, and then MGM went bankrupt shortly thereafter.
After some wheeling and dealing, Cabin in the Woods ended up in the hands of Lionsgate who will finally release it on April 13, 2012.
