Easily the most anticipated Super Bowl movie commercial was Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Unlike nearly all the other big Super Bowl movie spots, not a single piece of footage from this upcoming entry in The Avengers storyline had been seen by the public until yesterday evening.
I’m not a fan of how Marvel and Paramount chose to edit the Captain America Super Bowl spot but they did do a decent job of answering some of the big questions surrounding the film. We get numerous glimpses of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers prior to being injected with the Super Soldier Serum. I was initially not overly impressed when first seeing the Benjamin Button-like CGI used to put Evans head on a shorter and much slimmer actor’s body. Multiple viewings and screen caps in high resolution have swayed by opinion to a positive one.
We also get a look at the Howling Commandos complete with Dum Dum wearing his Derby hat. That brief glimpse is clearly a nod to the Marvel fan base.
The big reveal is also the quickest, our first look at Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. In the screen cap below you can see that Red Skull is pulling off a human skin mask to reveal the monster underneath. Will he be parading around looking human for awhile after being transformed into Red Skull?
You get the feeling from our first look at Captain America that director Joe Johnston and Marvel are keeping the “money shots” off the table for now. We’ll surely get a clearer picture of what Captain America is up to when the first full theatrical trailer is eventually released.
Captain America: The First Avenger arrives in theaters on July 22. You can watch the Captain America Super Bowl spot instantly or in HD here or click any of the 30 screenshots below for the full 1080p high resolution version. It’s worth it, believe me.
