Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops continues to shatter gaming and entertainment records while solidifying the franchise as one of the biggest in gaming history.
Through its first five days available, Activision reports via its internal sales data that they have sold a record $650 million worth of Call of Duty: Black Ops games for Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC throughout the world. The previous record was held by the game’s predecessor Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which pulled in $550 million when it arrived approximately a year ago. This record includes movie box office, books and all other forms of entertainment.
Microsoft is also reporting some amazing Black Ops record-breaking statistics in relation to the first day the game was available. More than 5.9 million multiplayer hours were logged on Xbox 360 on November 9 by over 2.6 million unique players. Sony has been happy with the launch on PS3 but no statistics were offered by Activision in their press announcement.
Black Ops is also breaking records for retailers. GameStop reports the game drew more pre-orders than any other game in the company’s history, then went on to have the most successful launch at the retailer ever. Lines extending throughout and sometimes outside the store on launch day were reported at GameStop locations around the country.
