Yoshi will be getting his own dedicated console game for the first time since 1998’s Yoshi’s Story for Nintendo 64 with the upcoming Wii U exclusive Yoshi’s Yarn (tentative title).
The new Yoshi game is being developed by the same team behind Kirby’s Epic Yarn and you can certainly see the design aesthetic similarities via the first screenshots below. Takashi Tezuka, director of Yoshi’s Island and Yoshi’s Story, is overseeing the project.
In addition to using the “yarn” motif to drive its visual style, Yoshi’s Yarn side-scrolling play format and cobbled together look will instantly draw comparisons to Sony’s LittleBigPlanet. That’s not a bad thing at all considering the popularity, fun factor and visual flair that LBP delivers. Though it would have been nice to see Nintendo push Yoshi into a 3D world for his long-awaited return to headlining a console game.
There’s currently no timetable for the release of Yoshi’s Yarn.
