Electronic Arts and DICE have released a new nearly three-minute trailer and trio of high resolution screens from the much-anticipated upcoming sequel Battlefield 3 at GDC, all of which you can soak in the awesomeness of below.
Battlefield 3 is building up hype by the second thanks to the all-new Frostbite 2 engine, designed from the ground up (RIP Frostbite 1) and debuting with this game. One look at these screens and trailer and you can see what all the fuss is about. Frostbite 2 makes Battlefield 3 look amazingly realistic and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Destruction, physics and A.I. will all benefit from the upgraded engine.
The trailer has been titled ‘Fault Line Episode 1: Bad Part of Town’ and marks the second Battlefield 3 gameplay footage EA and DICE have released. It’s running off a PC and is based on pre-alpha software. In other words there’s still room for improvement, believe it or not.
A prologue let’s us know that the game, or at least this level, is set in the year 2014. Coalition forces are working along the Iraq/Iran border to restore stability to the region by working their way through an unnamed city. By the trailer’s second half it almost looks like playing through the movie The Kingdom with gunfire coming from hidden sniper nests, explosions and all hell breaking loose in the streets.
Frostbite 2 has been designed so that games built on it are scalable to consoles. There’s no promises Battlefield will look exactly this good on Xbox 360 or PS3, but it should be pretty close if not nearly indistinguishable depending on your monitor size.
